Darkness
“Rose, you are not this person,” he assured me. My eyes followed the sideways tango of the speckled Wood Thrush on the birdfeeder outside the window. I could feel Father Hubert’s eyes flicker across my face, searching for a sign or symptom that he wouldn’t find: a twitch, a shudder, or a dark gleam hiding at the very back corners of my eyes. I was disinterested in his services, but my parents were not. In exchange for what he called a “small donation” to the church, he promised to expel the evil within me. I behaved as headstrong as I always had when my “parents’ friends” visited: the psychologists, the psychiatrists, and now, Father Hubert. But he wasn’t ready to abdicate his nothing-but-priestly crusade to save the soul of “the rich couple’s daughter.”
“Dark forces have taken you,” he warned me. “The real Rose wouldn’t hurt Minty.”
My eyes stayed on the window. The thrush had been chased off by a Chickadee, which sat in the spot he’d conquered and ripped open seed after seed with its beak, devouring the fleshy center before the shells even landed in the grass.
I kept my eyes on the bird. “She was yappy.”
The Chickadee darted away, and the yellow curtains around the window stole my attention, unnaturally bright against the pallor of the rainy spring morning. Mom said she bought them to accentuate the yellow pollen in the daisies on the wallpaper, but the yellow was too much. The petals of the daisies faded into the background while the yellow circles seemed to bleed into larger blobs, which burned the eyes along with the curtains.
“You’re letting him win, Rose,” he whispered. “You’re letting him corrupt your soul.”
I turned from the curtains and smiled at him. “Demons don’t exist, Father.”

Chapter One
The hands of the clock had long since passed noon before the head maid came to my bedside, bearing a bucket of water that had undoubtedly been collected from the cow pond. She had only waited this long in order to prolong my punishment and overtake my household duties; of this I was certain.
Haha no, but I thought I’d let my only fan know that I’ll be posting something late tonight after my two-hour pointless dance rehearsal, which consequently is interrupting my happy writing time. grrrrrrAAHHHHHH. Anger gone. Moving on.
See you later tonight! :D
